We proudly introduce Dean Keyworth, a Rhodec Diploma graduate from the UK who has gone on to set up his own highly successful interior design practice, and who in November was elected Vice Chairman of the British Interior Design Association
I studied for my Diploma in Interior Design with Rhodec whilst working as a European marketing manager for Hilton Hotels in the mid 90's. After practising on a few friends' houses whilst studying, I started to be recommended for 'paying' jobs and left Hilton to set up Armstrong Keyworth Interior Design in 1997. Initially, I combined the interior design with freelance marketing consultancy, but since 1999, I have concentrated purely on the design side. My first lucky break was to have my own house featured in Ideal Home magazine.
The house in South London was a labour of love - turning 3 dingy flats back into one large family house; the editor of the magazine liked the dining room so much that it was featured as the front cover the following month.
This, together with other magazine and newspaper coverage, helped raise the profile of my company, and larger projects followed.
I joined the British Interior Design Association very early on, initially as a student member, and found it invaluable in terms of industry contacts and advice from more experienced designers. With the marketing skills from my previous career, I began to get involved with the marketing of the BIDA and last year was elected to its board. In November 2005 I took on the role of Vice-Chairman and will be Chairman from November 2006. I feel very honoured to have been elected to this position by some of the most experienced and talented interior designers in the industry, and it doesn't seem that long since I awaited with trepidation the post that brought marked perspective drawings or colour work from my Rhodec tutors!
